The first step is to identify the type of speaker you are working with. Passive speakers require an external amplifier or AV receiver because they do not generate power on their own. In a home theater system, for example, each speaker must be connected to its designated output on the AV receiver, such as front left, front right, center, or surround channels. In car audio systems, wiring follows the same principle of matching positive and negative terminals.
